Leaving Christchurch today journey to Lake Tekapo and view the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd which was constructed by settlers in the area from locally gathered stone and oak. Continue on to Mt Cook National Park, a World Heritage-listed area and home to New Zealand’s highest peak, Mt Cook. Continue to Lake Ohau Lodge on the shores of picturesque Lake Ohau. Tonight enjoy a special High Country dinner.

Leaving Lake Ohau we travel to the East Coast. Visit the town of Oamaru, renowned for its local cream limestone architecture. We continue south to view the unusual Moeraki Beach boulders. This afternoon we arrive in Dunedin, renowned as the Edinburgh of the South. Enjoy a city sightseeing tour including a visit to historic Olveston House and the majestic Railway Station. Tonight enjoy a Scottish evening and dinner at your hotel, complete with bagpipes, kilts and haggis.

Tour historic Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle. Built by William Larnach for his first wife, the castle took 200 workmen five years to build. View the restored rooms filled with New Zealand antiques. Departing Dunedin travel through rich countryside as we cross the South Island. Continue to the lakeside settlement of Te Anau, gateway to the magnificent Fiordland National Park.

Today we follow Milford Road, renowned as one of the world’s finest alpine drives. Wind through the Eglington and Hollyford valleys, then pass through the Homer Tunnel. Cruise the World Heritage-listed Milford Sound, past cascading waterfalls, sheer cliffs, towering mountains and dense rainforest. Keep a look out for the dolphins, seals and penguins that call Milford Sound home. Drive to the alpine resort of Queenstown in the afternoon and this evening cruise aboard the TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak Sheep Station and enjoy dinner at the Colonel’s homestead.

Travelling towards the West Coast, pass the shores of lakes Hawea and Wanaka. Journey over the Southern Alps and through spectacular Haast Pass which was once the route used by Maori to carry greenstone from the West Coast to the Makarora River in Otago. Arrive in the village of Haast and stop in at the Haast Visitor Centre to learn more about this World Heritage-listed area.

Enjoy the incredible scenery of mountains, glaciers, limestone landscapes, lakes and rivers as we travel along the West Coast. This morning we journey north along the dramatic coastline to Punakaiki to view the fascinating pancake rock formations and blowholes. We then board the award-winning TranzAlpine Train. This journey has been voted one of the top train journeys in the world and is renowned as New Zealand’s ‘Great Rail Adventure’. Enjoy the stunning scenery as we journey through spectacular gorges, river valleys and across the country’s greatest mountain range, the magnificent Southern Alps. Climb up into the Main Divide before crossing the vast patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains to arrive in Christchurch.
