Ever wonder why they called it "White Island"? This is an in-depth guided tour of one of the World's most interesting active volcanoes. You will be collected from your Rotorua accommodation and taken to Whakatane Wharf, a drive of about 100km, or 1.5 hours.
Board a specifically designed launch boat and cruise out to the island over the next 80 minutes. Depending on conditions, there will be plenty of time to take in the scenery and marine life and enjoy the commentary. Your qualified guide will inform you of the island’s geogological history with scientific information explained in an easy-to-understand manner.
On the cruise you will be handed your safety gear - a hard had an a gas mask. Please be sure you wear closed in shoes. The only way to land is by boarding a large inflatable boat from a fixed concrete jetty. There is a short ladder to climb and a steel planking system to cross, for which you will need to 'sensible' shoes.
Once ashore New Zealand's only active marine volcano, you will smell the sulphur in the air. Trained tour guides will take you through the remains of the old sulphur mining factory. Lets get up close and personal with the bright yellow sulphur crystals.
Venture right up to the main crater’s edge. It’s all here, the hissing, roaring, eerie steam rising from the crater lake.
After feeling the awesome power of Mother Nature, sit back, relax and indulge in one of our delicious lunches on board the launch during the trip home. We might even be lucky enough to spend some time with dolphins, whales or the NZ Fur Seal.
