Rangitoto Island is a iconic shaped, dormant volcano. The journey is a pleasant ferry ride on the 'City of Sails' harbour. The ground of the island is crusty and black which crunches under foot, but the centre of the volcano is surprisingly green. Imagine the thrill in standing on this dormant, giant volcano which last erupted 600 years ago. Board the city ferry for a 30 minute cruise across the Waitemata Harbour to Rangitoto Island.
Upon arrival an island Ranger will greet you, and guide you to the unique 4WD road-train needed to cross the crunchy black rock, rugged lava crops and native bush on the eastern side. The lava fields contain big, black rock everywhere. Whilst on board, your Ranger will talk to you about the geology of the island.
Travel through a large Pohutukawa forest (tree with beautiful red blossums native to New Zealand) to the base of the summit. From here it's a 10-15 minute walk along a scenic boardwalk to the top.
Take in the panoramic views and marvel at being surrounded by 42 other dormant volcano islands in the scenic harbour. On the return journey the 4WD vehicle will pass through a unique fern glen, along the western side of the island to the wharf for the return cruise home.
- Child ages are 5-15 years inclusive (0-5 years are free if sitting on a lap, but if a seat is required a child fare must be paid)
- No shops are located on the island so it is advised that passengers take food and drink

- Although there is not a great deal of walking, it is a good idea to bring water, a snack/lunch, sun screen and a hat, as the island can get very hot
- The 10-minute walk to the Summit includes stairs. The walk is optional as some passengers may choose to stay and enjoy the view from the base of the summit
- Experienced driver-guides providing full commentary
- Maximum passengers is 48
